Here he had to first create this ecologically minded, science fiction fantasy tale as a comic book to generate enough interest to get the film version off the ground. Miyazaki had directed before, but he'd been adapting the work of other writers or writing and drawing for other directors. While it proudly bears the Studio Ghibli banner, this stunning 1984 classic was actually produced before the studio's creation the team went on to form the famed imprint shortly after this hit big at the Japanese box office. If anything, playing catch up with his work means there's a wealth of previous works waiting to be uncovered by newer converts. In the west we only really discovered animation master Hayao Miyazaki well into his career when 2001's Spirited Away was chaperoned into cinemas by Pixar's helpful John Lasseter.
